This Latine Heritage Month Feels Different
We are Here and We Belong!
This year, Latine Heritage Month feels different. I’ve always believed our voices carried power, but now... more than that, our voices carry resonance.
We are more than the color of our skin.
We are more than the languages we speak.
Our culture is a living network, each vein and root steeped not only in sorrow, but in fight, in resilience.
Yes, there is trauma. There is pain, bloodshed, abandonment, tears, loss, suffering, and death.
But we are more…
We are love.
We love hard. We love deeply, creating bonds that defy logic. Our neighbors become our aunts and uncles—tíos and tías. They become our second mothers, fathers, and abuelos. Our friends become family. We become siblings, formed not through blood, but through deep understanding. We know that in community we survive, we strive, we stand strong. En la unión está la fuerza.
We are joy.
It’s evident in every tone and rhythm of music, in our cheers, in our dance, in our pure rejoicing. Our rhythms move not only our bodies, but our souls. Each note dissolves borders, transcends language, and carries us back to our roots. A joy so palpable even our ancestors sway with us. We find absolute joy in our food, because it is more than nourishment. It is memory, threads no border can separate. It is a prayer. It is home—a bond and connection to one another, to our ancestors, and to the divine.
We are Magic.
Yes magic. We defy logic... for some. We shine in sports, in gastronomy, in science, in pure perseverance. We thrive in every industry... in the arts, in literature, and much more.
No wonder they want what we have so badly.
They want our amber, our topaz, our amethyst. Even our azabache.
They want our threads and our fabrics. Our sombreros.
They want our food. They want to claim our music as theirs, to use our art for profit...
to stand on the very ground that raised us—on the very ground that bled us.
This Latine Heritage Month, more than ever, feels like an act of resistance, resilience, and love. We must uplift one another... stand proud and strong. We must show the world that we are here. We belong.
In the bookish community, you’ll find our stories reflect all of this, and so much more.
We exist in every genre. Our tales reach across cultures and languages. Yes, there is our history... our memoirs, our resistance, our resilience, our pain, our mourning.
But we are also romance, horror, mystery, contemporary fiction, magical realism, thriller, epic fantasy… and beyond.
